Asymptomatic Plasmodium vivax infections induce robust IgG responses to multiple blood-stage proteins in a low-transmission region of western Thailand
April 28, 2017
Background Thailand is aiming to eliminate malaria by the year 2024. Plasmodium vivax has now become the dominant species causing malaria within…
Targeting the cell stress response of Plasmodium falciparum to overcome artemisinin resistance
April 22, 2017
Resistance to the main antimalarial drug artemisinin is emerging. This work shows that the parasite protects itself against artemisinins by activating a cellular stress response. We showed that extending the course of treatment with artemisinins or combining them with clinically-used anti-cancer drugs can overcome artemisinin resistance.
Initiation of gametocytogenesis at very low parasite density in Plasmodium falciparum infection
April 1, 2017
It has long been speculated where the malaria parasite changes from the blood stage asexual form to the gametocyte that is ready for mosquito infection. Using a novel approach and material from the human challenge study, this study demonstrated that the parasite commits to its sexual stage while in the circulation.
