Resistance to the main antimalarial drug artemisinin is emerging. This work shows that the parasite protects itself against artemisinins by activating a cellular stress response. We showed that extending the course of treatment with artemisinins or combining them with clinically-used anti-cancer drugs can overcome artemisinin resistance.

It has long been speculated where the malaria parasite changes from the blood stage asexual form to the gametocyte that is ready for mosquito infection.
