Indonesia is aiming to eliminate malaria by 2030 but is challenged by extensive heterogeneity in malaria epidemiology. P. falciparum and P. vivax account for equally high contributions to the local malaria burden, with high risk of P. vivax infection shown to follow treatment of P. falciparum, justifying the need of diligent surveillance of both species.

In this presentation, we describe genomic analysis of a unique collection of P. vivax isolates from eastern (Sumatra) and western (Papua) Indonesia. We explored genomic insights into local and cross-border patterns of transmission spread as well as any adaptations in the local P. vivax populations to inform on reservoirs of infection and intervention strategy.
