June 25, 2018

The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council recently awarded $2.5 million to found the Australian Centre of Research Excellence in Malaria Elimination (ACREME). On 19 February, malaria researchers from Australia and partners from Malaysia and Indonesia gathered at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne to launch ACREME and outline its research agenda. The goal of ACREME is to accelerate malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific region, by undertaking collaborative clinical research within the three major themes of surveillance, diagnostics, and treatment. Expertise in high level statistics, advanced malaria mapping technologies and mathematical modelling will be applied to develop better tools to monitor, detect and treat malaria. ACREME will also have a strong focus on capacity building in the region and fostering the next generation of malaria researchers and practitioners who will deliver elimination policies to realise the goal of elimination malaria in the Asia-Pacific by 2030.
