From 25 June to 06 July 2018, The University of Melbourne hosted a DFAT Australia Awards Fellowship titled “Strengthening partnerships with the Australian Centre for Research Excellence in Malaria Elimination”. Malaria researchers Dr Nimol Khim (Cambodia), A/Prof Wang Nguitragool (Thailand), Dr Sompob Saralamba (Thailand), A/Prof Mayfong Mayxay (Laos), Mr Ha Nam Nguyen and Dr Xuan Thang Nguyen (Vietnam) spent time in the research groups of ACREME Investigators including A/Prof Alyssa Barry, Prof Ivo Mueller, Prof Julie Simpson, Prof Ric Price, Dr Sarah Auburn, and Dr Jack Richards.
The Australia Awards Fellowship provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen research ties, increase technical expertise in cutting-edge laboratory techniques and statistical analyses, and discuss collaborative clinical research projects. Fellows also attended the inaugural Malaria World Congress in Melbourne, which represented a unique opportunity for researchers, policy makers, industry leaders, funders and civil society groups to come together to discuss priorities for global malaria elimination.
Australia Awards Fellowships target current and future leaders and mid-career professionals who will be in a position to advance priority foreign affairs and development issues on their return home.
