Leann Tilley is Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, The University of Melbourne. Professor Tilley is particularly interested in how the malaria parasite alters its host RBCs in ways that underpin malaria pathology, as well as how the parasite transforms itself in preparation for transmission to a mosquito vector. Her lab has made significant contributions to studies of the action of and resistance to artemisinin, leading to the design of better antimalarial drugs. In 2015 she was awarded the Australian Research Council’s Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship to develop a cross-disciplinary program to measure, model and manipulate the complex cellular system of the human malaria parasite. Prof Tilley and a team of colleagues were honoured with the award of the 2016 Eureka prize for Infectious Diseases Research.
