Publication of report of Lancet Commission on Malaria Eradication

September 10, 2019

The Lancet Commission on Malaria Eradication, comprised of an international group of 26 leading experts, was convened to develop an evidence base to inform strategies to eradicate malaria at national, regional, and global levels. On 8 September 2019 The Commission’s report “Malaria eradication within a generation: ambitious, achievable, and necessary” was published in The Lancet. The report asserts that malaria eradication by 2050 is a bold but attainable goal, and a necessary one given the never ending struggle against drug and insecticide resistance and the social and economic costs associated with a failure to eradicate.

Importantly, The Commission suggests that annual spending of $6 billion or more will be necessary to achieve the goal of malaria eradication, with current global expenditure estimated to be approximately $4.3 billion. Therefore, an additional investment of $2 billion per year will be necessary. The report also asserts that for eradication to be achieved, strong and committed leadership and governance, reinforced through transparency and independent accountability mechanisms, will be essential.
